The remains of a volcano crater that has been defunct for about 150,000 years now, Diamond Head is one of the most prominent features of Oahu. It is also one of the most beautiful features of Hawaii's unique landscape. The crater itself is 3,520 feet in diameter and has a summit of 760 feet. At the end of the 19th century, the US entered Hawaii and saw defense as a key responsibility. Canons were places within secluded areas of Diamond Head. These were later followed by an observation deck and an underground command post. While these defenses have been abandoned with advances in modern technology such as radar, their presence is still noticeable from Diamond Head Trail.
Diamond Head Trail is a premiere hiking path along the crater. The trail, from beginning to end, is about 1 ¾ miles and takes about an hour and a half to complete. Most of the trail is paved. Features along Diamond Head trail other than the breathtaking beauty of the natural surroundings include two sets of stairs—one is 99 steps and the other 76. There is also tunnel that is 225 feet in length, and you should take a flashlight for this portion of the trail. Diamond Head Trail is considered an easy to moderate hike, although some portions of the trail can prove to be quite steep. It is also recommended to start your hike early, as there is no shade along the trail.
The hike along Diamond Head doesn't take long, but it is something that will stay with you for years to come. The trail itself is located just minutes from Waikiki Beach and makes for an excellent journey for individuals, couples, and families. Consider the next time you have even part of a day free in the Honolulu area taking a hike on Diamond Head Trail. The experience found here is one you won't find anywhere else.
