Explore Iolani Palace

      Located in downtown Honolulu, the Iolani Palace is the only royal palace to be found within the United States and was built in 1892 by the last monarch of Hawaii, King Kalakaua. When the monarchy declined so to did care for this national monument. It was not until the 1970s when a group of concerned individuals began the restoration of Iolani Palace. The restoration efforts of Iolani Palace continue today, although the site is opened to the public for regular tours.

      Throughout the year, a myriad of special events are held at Iolani Palace. Guided tours are given on an almost daily basis, taking men, women, and children through the archaic structure and beautifully landscaped grounds while educating them about Hawaii's rich cultural history. Tours can also be scheduled for schools and other groups. The Royal Hawaiian Band pleases crowds on Fridays, delivering free performance on palace grounds at the end of most weeks. On Saturday mornings, learn the art of traditional Hawaiian quilting. Iolani Palace can also be reserved for special occasions such as weddings and receptions, concerts, seminars and more.

      Iolani Palace is currently comprised of three major areas, separated by floors. The first floor contains state apartments, the throne room, and other official rooms. One the second floor, guests are treated to the private quarters of the former royal family, including the room where Queen Lili'uokalani was imprisoned for 5 years after yielding her power to the United States government. The basement has been converted into a gallery, which displays a number of facets from years long past including the royal crowns and regalia, jewelry, diplomatic papers, and more. Within the basement of Iolani Palace, one can also view the Palace kitchen and the chamberlain's office.
