Things Go Bump in the Night at the Polynesian Cultural Center's New "Haunted Lagoon" Canoe Ride This Halloween

Deep Discount Also Offered for Kama‘aina Annual Passes In October

La‘ie, HI – October 10, 2008 – This Halloween guests will face the darker side of the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) as they cautiously board each creaky canoe for the Center's new "Haunted Lagoon." From October 24 to 31 (closed on Sunday) PCC will give its visitors a unique way to celebrate the Halloween season with a twilight canoe ride departing periodically from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

In addition, local residents who want to come back to PCC for more can take advantage of a deep discount of 50 percent off the regular price of $40.00 for the Kama‘aina Annual Pass. The offer is valid for the entire month of October and is good for one kama‘aina annual pass purchase per adult with proof of Hawai‘i residency.

Rumors of a mysterious figure dressed in white, the La‘ie Lady, have been reported and unsuspecting guests may get a glimpse of her during the canoe ride. As local legend has it, this vengeful soul is a frequent visitor to the Center grounds on dark nights, incessantly searching for her child she left behind or her killer – no one knows for sure.  The ride will feature a keiki version that the whole family can enjoy, and a meandering, spookier version for those with braver souls. If you can stomach the frights and scares of the night, snacks and spooky souvenirs will also be available.

"Our Haunted Lagoon is the only one of its kind in the islands and we thought it would be a fun way for visitors and kama‘aina to celebrate the Halloween spirit with their friends and family," said Ray Magalei, director of marketing.

"Additionally, there aren't many Halloween activities available on the North Shore of O‘ahu, so we wanted to provide local residents with this unique opportunity close to home."

Island keiki will also have the opportunity to win tickets for a sneak preview of the Haunted Lagoon as PCC partners with Pepsi and Foodland for a Haunted Lagoon Artwork Contest. Winners will be awarded with exclusive passes to preview the Haunted Lagoon before opening day. Elementary aged keiki are eligible from kindergarten to 6th grade. For more information about the Haunted Lagoon Artwork Contest, contact Larie Manutai at (808) 780-8038 or by email to Hawaii@polynesia.com.

Each ride is $8 for adults age 16 and older, and $5 for keiki 5 to 15. Kama‘aina Annual Pass holders will receive one free ride per night. Parking is free after 6:00 p.m. For more information, call Polynesian Cultural Center's ticket office at (808) 293-3333 or visit the PCC website at www.polynesia.com.

Founded in 1963 as a non-profit organization, the PCC has entertained more the 33 million visitors, while preserving and portraying the culture, arts, and crafts of Polynesia to the rest of the world. In addition, the PCC has provided financial assistance to 17,000 young people from over 70 different countries while they attend Brigham Young University-Hawai‘i. As a non-profit organization, 100 percent of PCC's revenue is used for daily operations and to support education.
