Allstar Weekend and Kolohe Kai Bring Down the Hale at the Polynesian Cultural Center

Allstar WeekendLaie, HI – June 25, 2011 – Today at Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC), Allstar Weekend showed Hawaii fans why many consider them to be Disney’s “Next Big Thing.” The popular teen group, along with local homegrown favorite Kolohe Kai, didn’t just kick off the PCC’s summer season but showcased “A Different Side of …” PCC.

Excited fans anxiously waited in the PCC’s Pacific Theater to see Allstar Weekend’s inaugural Hawaii performance. The group definitely didn’t disappoint, immediately getting the crowd up on its feet right from the start by kicking off the concert with their hit song “A Different Side Of Me.” Despite the summer heat, Allstar Weekend continued to pump up the energy throughout the afternoon and, by the conclusion of their set, there wasn’t a single person sitting down and chants of, “hana hou!” could be heard throughout the venue.

Kolohe Kai opened the afternoon and had the crowd grooving to their reggae-influenced island music. The familiar sounds of “Ehu Girl” and “Cool Down” had fans dancing to the beat of the two-time Na Hoku Hanohano Award-nominated band.

“Wow!” said Raymond Magalei, PCC’s director of marketing. “Many people were really looking forward to this concert, especially since it was Allstar Weekend’s first performance in Hawaii, and they definitely put on an amazing show. There was great energy today in our Pacific Theater. A big mahalo has to go out to the kamaaina who are always so supportive of us. This is what we’re all about; bringing the community together.”

Allstar Weekend is best known for appearances on the Disney Radio’s “Next Big Thing” contest and popular songs like “A Different Side Of Me” and “Come Down With Love.” The group’s recently released song, “Not Your Birthday,” is currently being highlighted in the feature film Prom. The group’s debut album, “Suddenly Yours,” peaked at number 62 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

Allstar Weekend consists of high school friends from Poway, California, considered by many to be the next hit group among teens, the band members have already become big stars to legions of young fans.

The Allstar Weekend summer concert was the capstone event of PCC’s ”Go Native! June Kamaaina Special,” which offers Hawaii state residents general admission to PCC for the pupule (crazy) price of $15 – a nearly 70 percent savings. The new “Go Native!” activities were introduced this year and complement the already experience-rich island villages and exhibits at the PCC. They offer new and often thrilling ways to spend summer days, such as Samoan umu (aboveground oven) making, coconut tree climbing, outrigger canoe paddling and pareu (sarong) dying, among other hands-on activities.

Founded in 1963 as a non-profit organization, the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) has entertained more than 34 million visitors, while preserving and portraying the culture, arts, and crafts of Polynesia to the rest of the world. In addition, the PCC has provided financial assistance to nearly 17,000 young people from over 70 different countries while they attend Brigham Young University-Hawaii. As a non-profit organization, 100 percent of PCC’s revenue is used for daily operations and to support education.
