Lä‘ie, HI: Music
and dance will fill the Polynesian Cultural Center's Pacific
Theater for the 13th Annual Moanikeala Hula Festival
on Saturday, August 23. In previous years, the festival brought
keiki (children) from all over the islands to compete against
their peers. In
honor of the 40th Anniversary, the hula festival will not be a
competition and will focus on sharing and perpetuating the Hawaiian
culture, inviting entire hälau, including keiki and
adults, to participate. The performances will focus on hula 'auana or
modern style, with each hälau having 15 minutes to
perform a dance of their choosing.
The festivities began 13 years ago to honor Lä‘ie Kumu
Hula Sally Moanikeala Wood Nalua'i, who has done much to
perpetuate the teaching of hula at the PCC. Wood Nalua'i
was the PCC's first hula instructor when it opened in 1963
and continued until 1980, after which she was a consultant until
she passed away in 2000. Her niece, Sunday Mariteragi, initiated
the keiki hula competition after years of teaching hula
in Lä'ie.
