English and Maori are the official languages. Maori is a major Polynesian language, and as such, is similar to Hawaiian, Samoan, Tahitian, and other island languages, with which it shares many words that are identical or similar in sound and meanings. The Maori have made a conscientious effort over the past several decades to reinforce teaching their language to children - a preschool model of which has also been instituted in Hawaii.
