      LOCATION:  About halfway between Hawai'i and New Zealand, 4,500 km south of Hawai'i. It is sometimes called Rarotonga, after the main island.

      AREA:  240 square kilometers, or slightly larger than Washington D.C.

      POPULATION:  18,903

      DISCOVERED:  The Spaniard Alvaro de Mendaņa spotted the northern island of Pukapuka in 1595. Between 1773 and 1779, Captain James Cook sighted and landed on many of the southern islands.

      GOVERNMENT:  Self-governing parliamentary government in free association with New Zealand.
