Waimea Bay

Bringing its visitors both a sand and reef beach, Waimea Bay Beach Park gives swimmers a special treat during the summer months as the bay provides awesome snorkeling and calm conditions. As you venture out into The Bay, the ocean drops off to a depth of over 40 feet (it gets deeper as you go farther out) with a bottom consisting of sand and large boulders and a variety of reef fish and turtles. During the winter, though, the seemingly calm bay awakens like a sleeping giant and offers some of the largest rideable waves in the world. The surf can easily reach over 50 feet at Waimea Bay and only the most skilled challenge Mother Nature with their 9 foot gun surfboards. The waves at Waimea are some of the most spectacular and dangerous and the infamous Waimea shorebreak also wreaks havoc for surfer trying to get in and out of the surf. The World's top surfers come here every winter to test their skills and Waiema is a great opportunity for visitors to see the raw power of Hawaii's oceans. Waimea Bay also includes amenities such as restrooms, showers, lifeguards, and public phones. Please check with lifeguards before venturing into the ocean and check all warning signs posted on the beach.
