Making Mahi-mahi Your Favorite Fish

| Eat Polynesia

Last week, I talked about sashimi, sushi, and the Hawaiian favorite: poke. While I love each of these dishes, I’ll be honest and say that, as far as cooked fish goes, I generally prefer a nice piece of grilled chicken or steak to a cooked filet of fish. A rare exception to that rule, however, is the dish I want to introduce to you today: baked Mahi-mahi.

Mahi-mahi is a saltwater fish that can be found all over the world. It typically lives in the warm and tropical waters of places like the Caribbean, but it is strongly associated with the Islands of Hawaiʻi, the place where it derives its name. In Hawaiian, the word “mahi” literally means “strong,” and for good reason. The fish can often grow to be anywhere from 15 to 30 pounds, and it’s a common part of many of the islands’ several cuisines.

A light pink color shows the fish is fresh. The darker the color the less likely it is to be really fresh.

Baked Mahi-mahi Recipe

Ingredients

It can be prepared in an almost infinite number of ways, but for today’s recipe, you’ll need the following:

  • 2 lbs mahi mahi filets
  • 1 juiced lemon
  • ¼ teaspoon of garlic salt
  • ¼ teaspoon of ground black pepper
  • 1 cup a mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup of finely chopped white onion
  • 1-2 bags of bread crumbs

Directions

  1. Rinse fish and place in a baking dish
  2. Squeeze lemon juice on fish
  3. Sprinkle on garlic salt and pepper
  4. In a separate bowl, mix mayonnaise with chopped onions
  5. Spread mayonnaise and onion mix over the top of the fish
  6. Sprinkle with a layer of bread crumbs
  7. Place in an oven preheated to 425°F
  8. Bake for 25 minutes
  9. Enjoy!

One of the things I love about this particular mahi-mahi recipe is how filling it is. The bread crumbs, mayonnaise, and onions all add a substance to the dish that makes it a good deal heavier than many other recipes, a substance that, in my opinion, is a good deal more satisfying.

Mahi-mahi goes well with yellow rice, fried asparagus, zucchini, or sweet potatoes. My favorite way to eat it, however, is with garlic mashed potatoes. The tastes complement each other well, and the two dishes together make for an excellent meal. If you’re planning on entertaining soon, I wholeheartedly recommend mahi-mahi. Your guests will leave happy and impressed by your culinary skills. Mahi-mahi is a popular fish and can be found in most markets. No matter where you are, you should be able to find and enjoy it.
