| News at the Center | Cultures of Polynesia
Excitement filled Lāʻie, Hawaiʻi, as competitors from across Hawaiʻi, Tahiti, New Zealand, the Cook Islands and beyond gathered to celebrate their shared passion for Siva Afi, the art of fireknife dancing. Held on May 6, 2026, the inaugural competition opened with the Junior and Intermediate Divisions, captivating audiences through the remarkable skill, discipline, and dedication demonstrated by each performer.
Siva Afi, which translates to “fire dance” in Samoan, is a powerful cultural practice deeply rooted in warrior tradition. Originally a demonstration of strength, agility, and mastery of weapons rather than a performance art, it has evolved into a dynamic form of cultural expression that blends storytelling, precision, and breathtaking athleticism with a flaming knife or war club. Today, Siva Afi stands as a living symbol of heritage, identity, and cultural pride.
Given the exceptional talent showcased throughout these foundational divisions, selecting the top performers was no easy task. Many of these competitors begin training from a very young age, dedicating years to perfecting their craft. It is with great honor that we now recognize those individuals whose performances truly exemplified excellence.
We are proud to present this year’s winners in the Junior and Intermediate Divisions:
