Polynesian Cultural Center Offers Free Hands-On Agricultural Classes And Workshops

Learn how to grow food at home … and then some.
WHAT:
Have you ever thought about starting a garden of your own or growing produce and herbs at home but could really use some tips on how to begin? Ever been curious about how Hawai‘i’s most successful farmers are able to produce amazing produce? Then get ready for the second annual Polynesian Cultural Center’s AgDay festival! The fest offers community members looking to improve their green thumbs invaluable hands-on lessons and demonstrations on everything from starting a garden from scratch, creating soil that is healthy and alive, and making rich compost that strengthens a garden’s lifespan, to making lightweight cement planters and growing perennial crops and herbs.
The free and open-to-the-public festival will also feature presentations by industry professionals, including:
- Hannah Hubanks, O‘ahu Resource Conservation & Development Council
- Craig Elevitch, Ph.D., agroforestry educator, Agroforestry Net
- Wendy Rosen, Wendy Rosen Food Gardens & Farming Advocacy
AgDay festival exhibition booths will proudly showcase the hard work of local agriculture organizations and community farmers, who will also be on hand to share information about their produce, as well as knowledge on successful kalo (taro) and banana farming, and raising bees. Attendees will also find experts in creating newspaper seed pots, growing microgreens, container gardening, cooking and preserving one’s harvest, becoming zero waste farmers, and sowing seeds that will thrive in Hawai‘i’s unique climate.
