Polynesian Cultural Center Welcomes Back Its Water Show Huki: A Canoe Celebration

Polynesian Cultural Center Welcomes Back Its Water Show Huki: A Canoe Celebration

August 9, 2024 – Lā‘ie, Hawai‘i – Beginning today, the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) invites guests to experience the allure and adventure of island life through its relaunch of HUKI: A Canoe Celebration. Engage in moving rhythms and spirited island songs at 12:40 p.m. in the freshwater lagoon before the Islands of Polynesia. The show is free to watch with the purchase of general admission.

“We are excited to bring back our beloved canoe celebration show at the PCC” said P. Alfred Grace, President and CEO of the Polynesian Cultural Center. “Our team has been working hard to relaunch HUKI, which introduces our guests to the unique history and folklore of Polynesia and to ensures an elevated experience for all of our guests.”

The lagoon experience features a diverse array of canoes carrying world-class performers from across the Pacific. The family-friendly production showcases original music and performances choreographed by PCC’s musicians and cultural performance specialists.

Huki emphasizes unity of Polynesia through the vast Pacific Ocean, which is depicted through the show’s authentic drumming and chants, beloved island folk songs and traditional costumes.

In Hawaiian, “huki” means “to pull” – just like a giant net being pulled to gather fish.

The canoe performance was suspended in 2020 when the Center closed its doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic and after four long years, this beloved tradition is finally being restored. This is a completely new show that will continue to educate and showcase the vibrant cultures of Polynesia and its six island nations – Hawai‘i, Aotearoa (New Zealand), Fiji, Tahiti, Tonga and Samoa.
